That’s it.
That’s the post.
In all actuality I don’t really have much to say here, so this’ll be a short post. Is Devin a tad scary? Understandably so. But a friend of mine had a good perspective on it.
yeah everyone thought gpt was gonna replace devs
now it’s just useful for some things
Everybody was freaking out over how ChatGPT was going to replace a ton of employees and automate away their jobs. Initially, the fears seemed legit, but over time it’s been proven that that’s not the case. Just take a look at any sort of writing that’s generated from ChatGPT. It’s.. mediocre, at best. A summation of the average of all the shit-quality writing that exists on the internet. Devin, like ChatGPT, isn’t going to replace you, for the same exact reasons - it’s a summation of the average of all the shit-quality code that exists on the internet.
At least, it’s not going to replace you any time soon. I mean, the developers of Cognition Labs (the creators of Devin) have proved that Devin is FAR from being a replacement for software engineers.
AI tools such as Devin/ChatGPT/Copilot should be viewed as an extension of the developer, much in the same way that VSCode is an extension of the developer. It’s nothing more than a tool that can increase your productivity, not replace you.
That being said, stop using ChatGPT for writing code. It’s nothing more than a glorified autocomplete, predicting what the next most-likely word would be. It’s incapable of performing any level of logic or reasoning, and thus is not suitable for software development.
Copilot and Devin are, while a tad bit better, still much of the same. While these tools might produce code that’s somewhat helpful, you cannot depend on them to create reliable code.
Wouldn't it be wild going to work everyday, 9 to 5 or longer, with an end goal of developing your own replacement?
